A proclamation was held on February 21, 2011 by the Mayor of Oxford.
In a brief but emotional ceremony, Oxford Borough Mayor Geoff Henry offered an official proclamation on Monday night the 21st of February 2011, declaring that March 1 will now officially be recognized as “Eli Matthews Day.”
Eli Matthews valiantly battled leukemia before he passed away on January 20. The Nottingham Elementary School student championed the cause of finding a cure for the disease, working with his family to raise funds for the Leukemia Society.
When he was issuing his proclamation, Henry talked about how Matthews enjoyed typical pursuits like playing baseball, riding four-wheelers, and days at the beach.
But Matthews’ dedication to finding a cure for leukemia was anything but typical. From a very young age Eli, with the support of his parents, Paul and Ruth Ann, worked to raise money to support efforts to find a cure for leukemia. They participated in various Eli and Alex’s Lemonade Stand events.
Henry concluded his remarks by saying that Matthews served as an inspiration and was a hero to everyone who met him. The mayor encouraged every borough resident to remember Eli’s life and recognize his outstanding work.
Henry presented Eli’s family with a plaque commemorating the proclamation.
“We know our son was an inspiration to many. We are very proud. We thank the mayor—everyone—for this significant honor in his memory,” said Paul Matthews.
So with this Proclamation I ask everyone to spread the word ware Red and Black Eli’s favorite colors on March 1st in his memory and honor.
